Creative Gallery Idea

In my creative gallery, I honestly have no idea what I want to do. If I am using my topic from my paper, then I could try and find a way to link companies that I talked about because some of them overlap. Google maps could be helpful because the companies are in different places and they deliver to different places. There are also stores in other countries, so I could use the map to talk about those as well.

learning to love you more

The website, Learning to Love You More is an interesting site. It gets people out and encourages people to do something. Some of the things seem silly and unimportant like braiding someone's hair and taking a picture of the sun. But others seem like huge, life-changing things like calling Hospice and sitting with a dying person. These things seem meant to challenge you to make a difference in the world. Some are easy to do and some are very difficult. There is one that says to write your life story in a day and to not feel upset about the limited time restraint because you have the rest of your life to complete it. But it is an interesting thing to challenge you to do. The site is about challenging yourself.

Two Five Three

When I first looked at 253, I was completely and utterly confused. But as I read the description of the book on Amazon, it started to make much more sense. The use of multimedia in this book online is quite phenomenal. The way that you can use the links to see the way the passengers are related is interesting and can lead you to the end of the book and to passenger 253 without reading the book in its entirety and learning about every passenger. If you were reading the paper book, you would never be able to link these passengers the way it is done online. You would have to keep flipping back and forth once you read about something that sounds familiar. You could reach the end by cheating and skipping to it, but you would miss the connections of the passengers that is found by using the links online. This is an interesting way to tell a story and one that I particularly enjoy, even though it was confusing at first.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a resource that I once paid a lot more attention to. Due to the library lectures about why Wikipedia is the absolute number one thing I shouldn't use, I have looked for more reliable resources when searching for information. I don't use Wikipedia so much now because of the chance that the information I am getting from the site isn't the reliable research I am expecting.
My professors in the past have told me not to use Wikipedia if I am doing a research project for their class. Though I do sometimes click on it for a quick definition or reference to something if I type a topic into Google.
I think that some write for Wikipedia to correct the information that is on there, but I feel like that can't really be verified because anyone can go in at any time and change what is written. Because of this, you can never really be sure about the correctness of the information given on the site.

Abstract

Food is changing. The internet has created a lot of differences in the way that people eat. You can use an app to find places to eat in the city you are in based on type of food and price. If you don't like their suggestion, shake the phone and it will pick somewhere else. Not many years ago, the idea of this would have been laughed at.
Things I will be looking at for my essay include restaurant review sites, applications like the one discussed above and how you can now order your food online. Restaurant reviews have been around for a while. Not necessarily online, but in writing. But times are changing.
I think that it is really interesting the way that food is changing. The idea of ordering food online is strange to me. I usually just call and order. Why do I need to get online? And if I can get online from my phone to order, why not just call, like you're supposed to use the phone for anyway?
As far as buying groceries online and having them delivered, I definitely have to look into this more in order to form an opinion and also learn about it. Some days I wish there were drive thru grocery stores. There are drive thru restaurants, take out orders; why can't I call and say "hey I need a loaf of bread and a gallon of milk," and drive up to a window to pick it up? Is that lazy? Is that out of the question as something that is to come? Is that an American standard, that we should have all these things brought to us, rather than walking into a grocery store or a restaurant and picking stuff up ourselves? A few thoughts to ponder as I figure out my project.
As for the annotated bib, I'm getting there ok?!

So far, I like my project mainly because I got to pick what I am doing. I like having a choice rather than being assigned something because I am more likely to enjoy putting the time into the work if I like the topic. I think problems I am having right now are finding enough sources of information about my project. I want to make sure I have enough research about the topic, not just websites that offer online ordering of food, both restaurants and grocery stores, as well as delivery places I have found.

1,2,3 Post

For my blog, the title of my project, at least in my trailer, is Reviews by Rachel. I'm not really sure how good of a title this is, but it's pretty straightforward. I used this because it basically describes what I will be doing--reviewing restaurants in Morgantown.

The question I was using as my guide in my project is where can students who are unfamiliar with Morgantown go to eat and get the best deals, service, and food available. There are a lot of places out there and though some of the restaurants I am using are not just limited to Morgantown, they are places that students may not think to go, or may not realize have specials to help students afford their food. I am using the categories of wings, pizza, steak, and pasta because these are a few of my favorite things. There are a lot of options available for where to get these types of food. Although steak and pasta may be a bit more expensive and not an everyday meal, there are places that students can go for a nice night out with friends or a significant other, or with parents when they come into town. I always save a night out for steak for when my dad is visiting. He loves steak and always picks up the check. Talk about a good deal. See, you don't even need a coupon, just a parent!

As far as what Lessig would say about my project, I don't have a clue. I like to think that he'd say if you like it, do it, and don't worry about if other people like it or not.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Well I can tell you right now, that this trailer will be the hardest thing I do all semester.  Mainly because my brother received all of the computer-literate genes and I got only the basics.  Although I had a Journalism class that introduced me to iMovie, that was 3 years ago, and I have a PC at home, so I won't be using iMovie.  I probably don't remember how anyway.
I think my biggest problem with this assignment is that I am not sure how to approach a trailer for my topic.  I am researching restaurants in Morgantown and hopefully doing something resembling being a food critic, a job that I think would be really fun.  I am going to try to pick different types of foods like best steak, best wings, best pizza, best pasta, best Chinese, etc, and rate them on things including taste, pricing for college kids, wait time on the weekends, service, and whatever else I can come up with.  Doing this within the Morgantown area is exciting to me because I think that I would enjoy reading a blog like this.  College kids come to town and sometimes stick to the basic, familiar places to eat.  By having a blog like this to read, they will be able to have an idea of new places to try, if they at all value my opinion, which is hard to say yet.
But how do you put this into a trailer?  I have no idea!  Hopefully I will have some sort of epiphany on how to do this before it is due, or perhaps, I'll just ask some questions in class today to gain a better idea of what exactly my trailer needs to include.  To those of you struggling like me, good luck.  If you aren't struggling, give me some advice!  I'd love it!

The Ecstasy of Influence-Lethem

Lethem has an interesting opinion of plagiarism, especially for a writer.  He says that "the bulk, the actual and valuable material of all human utterances--is plagiarism," because all ideas are secondhand, consciously and unconsciously, drawn from sources everywhere.
I think that he is correct to say that the film maker in Iran should have been allowed to develop his own adaptation of Salinger's story.  He makes a valid point asking what would it have hurt Salinger for Mehrjui to show his adaptation to an audience.  Salinger should have been glad that someone enjoyed his story so much and was touched so deeply by it that they would want to develop their own adaptation.  Doing this does not destroy the story as Salinger wrote it.  There are many adaptations of stories out there.
Lethem says that "authors and their heirs should consider the subsequent parodies, refractions, quotations, and revisions an honor, or at least the price of rare success."  By threatening a lawsuit on the Film Society, Mehrjui is not given the opportunity to "build freely upon the ideas and information conveyed by a work,"as copyright encourages others to do.
